El expresidente de Brasil y candidato presidencial Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva recibió por una hora y media al encargado de negocios Douglas Koneff, principal autoridad de la embajada de Estados Unidos en Brasilia, quien defendió el sistema electoral brasileño, informaron fuentes del encuentro citadas por el diario Folha de Sao Paulo.
Oficialmente, el encuentro fue confirmado por el excanciller Celso Amorim y la presidenta del Partido de los Trabajadores (PT) de Lula, diputada Gleisi Hoffmann.
“Fue un encuentro bueno y amistoso”, dijo Amorim, que participó del encuentro con el senador Jacques Wagner, exgobernador de Bahía.
La reunión duró una hora y media en un hotel de San Pablo y fue vista como un gesto del presidente estadounidense, Joe Biden, ante la posibilidad, en base a las encuestas, de que Lula pueda convertirse en presidente electo el 2 de octubre en caso de vencer por la mitad más uno de los votos al mandatario Jair Bolsonaro, que busca la reelección.
“El diálogo -dijo la presidenta del PT- siempre es importante y obviamente Estados Unidos es importante por nuestras relaciones comerciales; ellos deben tener interés en conversar debido a la perspectiva de victoria de Lula; Lula estableció relaciones con embajadores de otros países también”.
La embajada de Estados Unidos dijo el martes en un comunicado que reuniones con dirigentes de Brasil son “valiosas oportunidades para escuchar opiniones políticas sobre el interés mutuo”.
Según Folha, Koneff envió el mensaje del gobierno de Biden que hay confianza en el sistema electoral brasileño, sobre todo ante las amenazas del presidente Bolsonaro de que puede haber irregularidades en su contra en caso de derrota, como repitió el lunes desde Londres.
Bolsonaro es aliado del republicano Donald Trump, el presidente derrotado en 2020 por Biden que no reconoció la derrota al denunciar fraude, una posición que también respaldó el ultraderechista brasileño.
Estados Unidos es el segundo socio comercial de Brasil desde 2009, cuando fue desplazado de ese puesto por China.
